New director says museum must be political rather than just business

Bishop says project has had success with student body at universities

The Alumni Club at Harvard University has an opening date that would make it one of the nation's largest and most ambitious free museums.

The Museum of American Memory will open on June 20, 2016, along with the Alumni Club for Academic and Professional Learning, as part of Harvard's new Alumni Center and the Charles M. Hall Family Education Building.

The $15.5 million structure is envisioned as the flagship space for both institutions, and will feature a collection of more than 100,000 objects. There will be an impressive collection of art from more than 20 countries, including some from the U.S. and Europe.

"This is very big. The whole Alumni Club should have 10,000 members and if I'm paying for one of them, I need to get 12," said Eric N. Fischbeck, president of the University of Massachusetts. "This is very much what we're trying to accomplish. Harvard really has a unique and powerful legacy here."

In 2007, Fischbeck opened a gallery that was eventually called the New Museum of Fine Arts at Harvard. Last year, the building housed the David G. Koch Foundation-sponsored David Horowitz Center for Art and Culture, an independent nonprofit museum devoted to the research and study of art and the impact it has on the culture of the United States.

Award-winning architect Daniel Libeskind has been named head of the new museum. The Alumni Club is named for longtime group leader Robert Alsop, and will become home to one of the more than 10,000 alumni members.

"What this really means is the university wants to be more about the whole than just this one part," said Thomas L. Fischbeck, a senior vice president at MIT, who is a trustee for the museum.

Fischbeck, a master's student and professor in museum studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, worked on the Alumni Club project as a student at Yale University and Harvard University. It featured more than 50,000 objects from more than 100 countries and produced an impressive exhibit showing the evolution of a 17th-century painting, the 1852 portrait of Benjamin Franklin, and the collection of thousands of items from more than 120 museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Alumni Club project was named by Fischbeck and his wife in memory of Richard Fischbeck, a founder of the Museum of Fine Arts of Los Angeles. But when the Museum of American Memory and the Fischbeck family purchased the home and property, they did not have the money to continue their museum research. A few weeks after the New Year, a reader with a history of writing nasty things in reviews emailed me a lengthy missive. She was a former World Wrestling Federation (WWE) star who had won several titles in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend. In 2010, she wrote a scathing review of the former WWE Champion, who, she wrote, had been found guilty of abusing his wife. She also referred to his wrestling, but said he should have been jailed for domestic violence.

I gave her my name and a phone number so she could get in touch with me. After a few e-mails back and forth, I finally got to the bottom of it.

A few days later, I received a call from a reporter with the New York Post who had followed her around for nearly a decade, and was very upset with her reporting on what she called the "compulsive gambler syndrome" in athletes' lives. She wanted to know why she had published the original 2009 review. I told her I wanted her to write a story on it. She replied that she would be surprised if she actually had anything to do with the review. But she also asked to be given complete anonymity until she heard back from me. She would publish her story as soon as her response, she wrote, came.

"You just had an incident to write about. It'll probably be the best-reported piece you'll ever write," she wrote.

I was deeply impressed by her candor and the sincerity of the writer's desire to help her out. What struck me was her desire to make sure that no one else was going to have to deal with the same issues. She didn't want to have to go through the same hell she and her husband had gone through.
